INTO THE WOODS

Into the woods

It was time for a last visit into the Woods in Småland for this year. We left Skåne Friday night and it was raining heavily. After half hour of driving the temperature dropped and the rain shifted to snow. The traffic slowed down and in the dark in the middle of nowhere we slowly went with the flow north.

The first night was cold. The snow shifted back to rain before we arrived and it rained all night. The sleeping bag did not keep the cold out and it was tough to get up and out. However, as soon as you get out and start to move it feels better and soon I got in a better mood. It stayed dark and dull all day. The rain swept back and forth and the forest was enveloped in fog, which together with the feeling of constant twilight did it all into an almost surreal experience. I shot all pictures with a D800 and a 50mm/1.4 lens and it seemed appropriate not to correct for the vignetting caused by the large aperture when kept vide open – just added to the muggy feeling.

Late at night the full moon rose and shone through scattered clouds and the temperature dropped. Then starry skies for some hours and the ground turned all white. Crispy grass under my feet and shiny crystals glittering everywhere in the moon light. Minus five and no wind – a second advent to remember! I sat the alarm early to be in place when the forest woke up and I went to bed late that night. I saw before me a gentle sunrise with the forest covered in thick hoar frost. The alarm went off and I headed out at dawn just to be met by overcast and heavy rain. The still moonlit landscape during the night felt like a distant dream. I went back inside and crawled into the sleeping bag for a while before the breakfast fire was lit.
